Choosing a 3PL in Melbourne isn’t something you want to get wrong. The fulfilment partner you pick will be responsible for getting your products into your customers’ hands — which means their mistakes become your problem, and their speed becomes your reputation.

Here are the 7 questions you should ask any 3PL before you commit.

1. What’s Your Cut-Off Time for Same-Day Dispatch?

Same-day dispatch is one of the biggest competitive advantages you can offer your customers, so this is non-negotiable. A 3PL that cuts off at midday gives you much more flexibility than one that cuts off at 10am. Ask specifically: “If I receive an order at 1:30pm, will it ship today?” and get it in writing.

Parker Express dispatches orders received before 2pm the same business day.

2. Do You Have Lock-In Contracts?

Some 3PLs require 12-month contracts with minimum volume commitments. This might be fine if you’re confident in your volumes, but it’s a risk if your business is seasonal or still growing. Look for a provider that lets you scale up and down without penalty.

Parker Express operates on no lock-in contracts. You stay because the service is good — not because you’re trapped.

3. How Does Your System Integrate With Shopify?

Manual order processing — where someone has to export a CSV from Shopify and upload it to a fulfilment system — is slow and error-prone. You want a 3PL that integrates directly with your store so orders flow automatically. Ask how the integration works, how long it takes to set up, and whether there are any extra fees.

4. How Do You Handle Errors?

No fulfilment operation is perfect. The question is: what happens when something goes wrong? Ask about their error rate, what their process is when an incorrect item is shipped, and who covers the cost of reshipping. A good 3PL will have a clear answer. Vague answers are a red flag.

5. Where Is Your Warehouse Located?

Location matters for transit times. A warehouse in South East Melbourne gives excellent access to Australia Post and major freight carriers serving all states. Ask about proximity to major carrier hubs and what typical transit times look like for your main customer locations.

6. What’s Your Onboarding Process?

How long does it actually take to go from “I want to sign up” to “my first order has shipped”? Some 3PLs take weeks to onboard new clients due to slow IT setups or manual processes. Ask for a realistic timeline and ask to speak to an existing client about their onboarding experience.

Parker Express can typically have new clients set up and dispatching within a few business days.

7. Who Will I Be Talking to Day-to-Day?

Larger 3PLs often route everything through a ticket system, which means slow response times and dealing with someone who doesn’t know your account. Ask whether you’ll have a dedicated contact, how they prefer to communicate, and what the typical response time is when something needs resolving urgently.

Parker Express is a small, hands-on team. You’ll deal with real people who know your account and can sort things out fast.
